Hans Memling
Triptych of Earthly Vanity and Divine Salvation
c. 1485 Oil on Oak Panel Musee des Beaux-Arts

This reminder of death and the ephemeral aspect of life are themes very apparent Memling’s Triptych. This personal piece demonstrates ideas and themes in the Triumph pieces. The Transi or rotting corpse is represented on the left demonstrating the transition between life and death. The center scene has a more Vanitas theme where it demonstrates the fleeting ephemeral components of one's life. The right panel demonstrates the eschatological ideas about what comes after this world.
