Arcidiecezni museum Olomuoci
Through the use of distorted proportions, the artist draws the viewer in by evoking a sense of misery, disgust, and pain. The viewers are confronted with imagery they can understand creating a link between Christ’s physical sacrifices and themselves. Mary is holding the dead Christ in her arms. His body is limp, clearly dead, and his wounds are palpable and viscous. The physical suffering of Christ is emphasized by his injuries and the sadness and sympathy on Mary’s face. There is no serenity or vacant expression on the face of Mary, which has been a common representation of her character during prior periods.
