The Yaquina head lighthouse was lit for the first time on August 20th 1873 after Andrew Johnson set being the land aside in 1866. As identified by the Bureau of Land Management, during the 1800’s Maritime travel and commerce along the Oregon coast necessitated the creation of Lighthouses to protect the ships. The lighthouse became automated in 1966, which heralded the end of the era of the lighthouse keepers.
